We are happy to announce that the new Scorpion SII-40mm motors have arrived and are available for purchase. These new motors feature several improvements including a new cooling fan that works equally well in either direction, a new stator profile for higher
efficiency, a retaining lip on the back of the rotor can to securely retain the magnets, and a new front end that allows the use of either a compression collet style prop adapter or the new bolt-on style prop adapter. Both types of prop adapters are included
with each motor, so the end user has the choice of which one to use for their specific application. In addition to the two prop adapters, a full accessory kit is included with each motor that includes an aluminum cross style backplate mount, mounting screws,
3 female bullet connectors to match the ones on the motor and heatshrink covering for the bullet connectors. The new motor series is available in 3 sizes, including the SII-4020, SII-4025 and SII-4035 models, with 3 different Kv values in each size so you can
get a perfect match for your aircraft, depending on the battery and prop that you intend on using.
Just in from Scorpion are several new products that are Must-Have items! First is the new Scorpion Power Station. Many of the small hand-held electronic devices that we carry every day are charged from a USB port. However, sometimes while we are travelling
or just out an about, these devices can run out of juice and there is no place to recharge them. The new Scorpion Power Station solves that problem in a simple, easy to use package. The Power Station contains a rechargable 5200mAh Li-Po battery that can be
charged from any computer USB port, or any USB wall charger. Once charged, you can toss the Power Station in your pocket, purse or briefcase and be able to recharge your phone, camera, tablet PC or any other device that uses a USB port for charging. The
Scorpion Power Station comes with a Micro USB charging cable, and sells for only $56.00.
Next from Scorpion is the Backup Guard. This product powers your RC flight pack the same way that a UPS protects your computer from re-booting during a power failure. The Backup Guard combines a 2-cell 500mAh Li-Po battery with a 10 amp Linear 5.1 volt BEC
circuit to provide power to run your Receiver and Servos in the event that your primary battery or BEC fails. Once turned on, the Backup Guard waits in a stand-by mode monitoring the voltage oof the power buss inside your receiver of flybarless controller. If
the voltage drops below 5.0 volts, the Backup Guard instantly turns on and powers your radio gear. The backup Guard will not only take over if your primary battery or BEC fails, it will also switch on momentarily during heavy servo loads to prevent the receiver
from experiencing a dreaded "Brown-Out Event" that can re-boot the receiver and cause a loss of control until the receiver comes back on line. The Backup Guard weighs only 1.3 ounces, and retails for only $24.99, making it one of the cheapest "insurance
policies" you will ever find.

Motor Bearing Lubrication Kit now available
To keep your brushless motor operating at maximum performance, it is important that the bearings in your motor be properly maintained. This is especially true of helicopter
motors that often spin in excess of 45,000 RPM. In an average flight, the motor in a 450 size helicopter spins around almost a quarter million times! Without proper lubrication,
the balls in the bearings can wear out quickly, leading to premature failure.
We have put together a motor bearing lubrication kit to help extend the life of the bearings in your Scorpion brushless motor. This kit contains a 25cc bottle of bearing lubricant
and two needle point applicator nozzles. One nozzle is 1" long, and will work with the 22mm and 30mm motors, and the other nozzle is 1.5" long to use with 40mm and larger motors.
The oil included in the kit is a special product that actually bonds to the metal parts, and resists being thrown out by the high speed and centrifugal forces inside the bearings.
A small drop placed on each bearing about once every 10 flights is enough to maintain proper lubrication to insure the longest possible life for your motor bearings.
Click here to check out the Motor Bearing Lubrication Kit on our site.
Interview on All Things That Fly show:
Lucien Miller, the owner of Innov8tive Designs, was the featured guest on Episode 24 of the Inside Heli internet radio program. In this interview, Lucien shares all of
the interesting things that were seen during his recent trip to the Scorpion Factory the first week of June. To compliment the interview, a 5-page website was put together
that provides photos and videos of the topics discussed during the interview. The interview can be listened to or downloaded at the All Things That Fly Website. You can also find the link to the photo page on the site, or Access it
We have gotten a few calls lately concerning the shipping costs calculated on our website. When we originally set up the site, the only items that were offered were
Motors, Speed Controllers and Batteries. Since we ship with USPS Priority Mail, the site was set up to charge $5.00 shipping for the first item, and add $1.00 for each
additional item. At the time it was set up, this system worked very well, but lately there have been some issues with the system. Over the past year, we have added a lot
of small parts to the website, and this has created a situation where many times, a shipping charge gets calculated that is too high. If someone orders a dozen 6 inch
props, they have $10.00 worth of product with a $16.00 shipping charge! The new site we are developing will address this issue, and make it easy to get exact shipping
We are in the process of re-designing the entire webstore site, so in the mean time, what we are doing is making manual adjustments to the shipping costs before the order
is actually billed to your credit card. If you pay for the order with PayPal, we will issue a shipping refund to get the shipping charge back down to the actual shipping
cost. Our new site will use a weight based shipping calculator instead of an item based shipping calculator, so it will work no matter what you order. Sorry for the
confusion, and rest assured that we are taking steps to correct this.
Over the past year, we have been shipping to International addresses at the same rate as domestic US addresses as a service to our customers overseas. Unfortunately,
due to the recent increases in International Shipping rates, we can no longer afford to do this, as we are losing between $5.00 and $7.00 on every International order.
The shipping rates for the US and Canada will remain the same, but for any other country there will $5.00 International Shipping Surcharge added to the cost of your order.
There will be an International Shipping Surcharge added as a line item on the website, and this item will need to be orderd to process orders for customers that are
anywhere other than the USA or Canada. You will be directed to add this item during the check-out process if you forget to do so. Thank you for your cooperation with
this new shipping process!
All Scorpion motors come with a 2-Year warranty that covers defects in materials or workmanship, and this has not changed. The warranty change concerns the motor bearings,
and is effective June 30, 2008. The Scorpion Company has no control over how the motors will be used
in a model, and this is especially true for the helicopter motors. Due to the high spped at which these motors operate, if the gear lash is set too tight in a helicopter,
the side loads on the bearings can cause failure in a little as 5-10 flights. Also, due to the high speeds at which these motors operate, often in excess of 40,000 RPM,
the oil in the bearings can be thrown out after 10-12 flights. Because of these facts, we are recommending that the users of the Heli motors inspect the motor before each
flight t make sure that there is no wobble in the output shaft. This will catch any problems with the bearings before the bearings actually fail. Scorpion also recommends
that the bearings be oiled every 5-6 flights with a good silicone based motor oil, or a lubricating product such as Corrosion-X. This will ensure the longest possible life
fir the bearings and the motor. If the bearings do wear to the point where the output shaft wobbles at all, the motor should be taken out of service and the bearings should
be replaced. The bearings themselves will no longer be covered under the 2-year warranty, and any subsequent damage caused to the motor by the failure of a bearing will
also not be covered. It is the responsibility of the end user to make sure that the bearings are in good condition prior to each flight, and to cease flying immediatly if
the motor begins emitting any abnormal sounds that may be a sign of the bearings starting to fail.
Scorpion Motor Comparison Chart Now On-Line
With all of the brushless motors that are currrently available, it can be a confusing maze of numbers trying to figure out how one motor from a manufacturer compares to
another motor from a different manufacturer. We get emails every day asking, "What Scorpion Motor is equivilent to a 28-940 from Manufacturer X, or the kit calls for a
3245-18 from Company Z, what Scorpion motor would you recommend to replace it." To answer these kinds of questions, we have put together a very comprehensive list of 12
popular brand brushless motors, and matched them up with each other and the appropriate Scorpion Motor that is closest in performance. This chart can be viewed on-line
at our Scorpion Motor Matching Chart. For a formatted 2-page PDF version of the
Motor Comparison chart that is ready to print, please download the Scorpion Motor Chart Zip
Scorpion Calc V3.60 Software Available for Download
After several months of use by modelers all over the world, the Scorpion Calc software has become very popular for testing out battery and prop combinations on Scorpion
Motors. This newest version has added prop data for all of the currently available Scorpion motors including the new SII-40mm, SII-5525, SII-5535 and SII-6530 series motors,
for those people that want to use these motors in aircraft applications, or
that just want to check out the current draw and RPM numbers under various loads. It also has a new layout that is wider so it will fit on the smaller displays of
netbook type mini laptop computers. This program has the parameters for all of the Scorpion motors pre-loaded
into it, making prop selection a snap. With Scorpion Calc, you can experiment with different props and input voltages to see what kind of performance you can expect. The
program currently has a database of 270 propellers ranging from a GWS 3x2 up to a Mejzlik 32x10, so there is a wide range to choose from. For any given prop and voltage,
Scorpion Calc will give you the RPM, Pitch Speed, Current Draw, Watts, Motor Efficiency and Estimated Motor Temperature. The fields for Rm, Io, Kv and motor weight are
user selectable, so if you have another motor you want to simulate, just plug in the values and Scorpion Calc will do the rest.
Scorpion Calc is the work of Louis Fourdan, a
French RC modeler and programmer, that worked with Scorpion to develop this great piece of software. The best part is that it is available for FREE by going to the
Scorpion Calc Thread on RC Groups to find the latest version that is available.
Here is a screen shot of the Scorpion Calc program in use. In this simulation, a Scorpion SII-4020-540 motor is being tested with an APC 14x10E prop, running at 21 volts to
simulate a 6-cell Li-Po battery under load.
In this screen shot, you can see that Scorpion Calc predicts that the motor will turn at 9,531 RPM with a pitch speed of 90.3 MPH. The prop will produce 157 ounces of
thrust and absorb 165.9 ounce-inches of torque. Further down you can see that the estimated operating temperature of the motor at this load is 163.1 degrees F, and that
the motor is operating at an efficiency of 80.5%. With this prop, the motor will draw 69.359 amps of current, which gives an input power to the motor of 1451.7 watts,
and based on the 80.5% efficiency of the motor, this would yield 1168.6 watts at the prop. Every time you change a prop, or adjust the input voltage, Scorpion Calc will
re-calculate all of the values for the new inputs. This makes selecting the right prop for your Scorpion motor as easy as bolting it on!
